Random Fridays: Books I Wanted to Throw Against a Wall

http://bookworm716.blogspot.com
Hullo, everyone! I'm sure everyone's read at least one of those books, the sort that make even the gentlest soul want to hurl them against the nearest wall. Maybe the main character annoys you, a plot twist nearly drove you mad, or your favorite character died, or maybe your motivation is something else completely different. It might not be a bad book- it might even be one of your favorites- but the desire is still there. This week's Random Friday is about the books that do it for me.

1. Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
I mostly blame Eragon (the character) for this. He annoyed me for a very long time. I don't remember specific reasons (I haven't read the books in a while), but I do recall thinking that he made a lot of idiotic decisions . . . particularly concerning Arya in book two. I mean, yes, I shipped them, but I still thought that Eragon could've gone about things a little better. Thankfully, he shaped up a bit in time for Brisingr.

2. The Star Wars novelizations
Episodes II and Episode III were the worst . . . Anakin is in my top five favorite Star Wars characters because he has some pretty good lines (particularly in Episode III) and because you can't help feeling sorry for him in some ways, but I also want to smack him across the face and talk some sense into him. The original trilogy was somewhat better, but Luke still bugged me. And then there's Episode V, in which everyone bugs me. And there's Yoda, who I kind of don't like. Call me weird, but I don't.
3. The Elite by Kiera Cass
If your romantic relationship is forbidden on pain of death, end said romantic relationship. Do not continue it in secret, especially not when you're staying in the royal castle, and especially especially not when you're a much better match for the other guy in the love triangle. It will end in trouble and heartbreak and all sorts of messiness.

Now for some books which contained entirely too much angst (but are otherwise pretty awesome):
4. Insurgent by Veronica Roth
5. The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
Vin. Elend. Seriously. You fell in love with each other because of who you are. Stop freaking out about it.
6. To Darkness Fled (and the first half of From Darkness Won) by Jill Williamson.
Achen, stop complaining about being king and having to get married to someone who's not Gren or Tara. Done? Thank you. Vrell, stop being in denial. You and Achen are made for each other and you know it. Your stubbornness is not amusing.

7. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Everyone knows how I feel about Mockingjay by now, probably. I won't repeat it. (If you actually don't know and you want to, ask me and I'll tell you in the comments.)

Not all these books are bad- in fact, I really like most of them. But that doesn't stop me from getting aggravated- usually because of characters and their bad decisions. Or their angst. (Maybe this post should've been about characters I'd like to talk some sense into instead.)
What about you? What books give you an urge to introduce them to the nearest wall? Please tell me in the comments!

Tschau!

Tag! I'm it!

Hey'a, everyone! It seems that Hyperlinkzer tagged me on his blog. (My first tag on this blog- exciting, isn't it?) To perform the tag, I have to state ten random facts about myself and then tag ten other bloggers. To the ten other people, I apologize in advance. You'll probably all have been tagged before at least once.

So, anyway, on with the tag!
  1. The first fantasy books (other than fairy tales) that I can remember reading were The Chronicles of Narnia
  2. Currently, my favorite word is bumfuzzle, which means confuse, perplex, or fluster.
  3. I love Laser Tag (though I haven't played it much) and would happily spend an entire day playing it.
  4. I own the extended editions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King
  5. I may or may not spend a good bit of this evening watching The Fellowship of the Ring. I want to, but it depends if I'm busy and if I decide I need to write and whether or not I have enough time to watch a decent amount of it.
  6. Two of my three favorite hairstyles are from the Hunger Games movies: Katniss's braid from The Hunger Games and Prim's braid from Catching Fire.
  7. I'm hoping to make a Lorien cape (like the ones in The Lord of the Rings) over the summer. I'm also thinking of trying to knit a cape at some point in my life.
  8. My Camp NaNoWriMo word count is 44,513 words, which means I have 5,487 words left to write before I complete my goal (though not my book).
  9. I used to always put Parmesan cheese on white rice.
  10. I have no idea what else to say here.
Now my random facts are done, and I just have to tag people. Once more, I apologize if the person I've tagged has been tagged before. So I tag . . .

Emma (a friend of mine from WI)

Um. I seem to be out of people to tag who I know haven't been tagged at least once or twice already. So . . . if you read this, you have a blog, and you feel like doing it, go for it!
Namárië!*

Just a Quick Update . . .

Hello, everyone! It's me, back with another update. This week has been mostly uneventful: school, a little writing, a little editing, and a little reading. I will be posting some poems and a short story on here over the next week or two, though, so I guess I got something useful done. I really need to get busy with writing and editing, because next month is November and that means NaNoWriMo begins in exactly 24 days, 17 hours, and 11 minutes. (That's not to be confused with when I start writing, since I usually don't do the stay-up-late-and-start-at-midnight thing like some people. I'd like to, but staying up that late usually results in me getting sick.) I've already figured out what my plot will be; here's a summary of it:
"Emma Alyron has spent the last several years trying to avoid her family and all the trouble that surrounds them, but all her hopes for peace have just come crashing down around her. When Gwen's search for Jake brings her and the Firhirts to Beylend, the two sisters run into each other, with disastrous consequences. To make things worse for all and sundry, Jared Alyron is in town, and everyone knows that when Jared's around, trouble's sure to follow. Emma soon learns a secret that could make the difference between life and death, but will she be willing to share it if it means falling headfirst into what she's been running from half her life?"
It's not the best summary I've ever written, but I'm excited about the plot. I've been wanting to write it for some time, but haven't gotten around to it until now. I'm hoping that'll make NaNoWriMo go easier for me and keep me from getting stuck.

The one exciting thing that did happen this week is that I finally got to see The Hunger Games yesterday! I read (and reviewed) the series back when the movie first came out, but didn't go see it in theaters. Now that it's out on DVD, we were able to get it out from the library so my mom (who also read the series) and I could see what we think. Overall, I thought it was fairly good, but not one of my top five favorites. I didn't like how shaky the camera was all the time, or all the changes they made from the book. I also wasn't happy about how Katniss talked to her mother in one scene. Aside from that and one or two other small things, however, it wasn't bad, and I'll probably try to get it if I can.

That's really all I have to say today. Thanks for stopping by, and don't forget to check back for my writings! Namarie!
